Greetings to the Emory Fellowship congregation! The happenings at the Emory Fellowship for April/May 2009:
Holy Week Worship Service:
· Maundy Thursday (Foot-Washing), Thursday, April 9 at 7:00 p.m. A re-enactment of the Lord’s Supper over International Cuisine and Foot-Washington – all taking place in the Fellowship Hall, Lower Level of Emory Church.
Good Friday, Friday, April 10, 7:00 p.m. – Creative worship, followed by our Annual Fish Fry.
Resurrection Sunday, April 12 – Sunrise Service at 7:00 a.m. followed by breakfast; 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon worship services.
Regular Worship Service:
Starting Sunday, April 19, we will be starting a new sermonic series on “Finding Deliverance from the Bruises, Burdens and Baggage of Life.” The series is entitled, “Set Me Free!” Check the web site at www.emoryfellowship.org and stay tuned for upcoming announcements.
Weekly prayer service at Emory—each Wednesday at 12:00 noon and again at 7:07 p.m. in the church Sanctuary. All are welcome!
Choir Rehearsal—Each Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanctuary. Children, Youth, Adults-if you are interested in joining the choir, please contact Gheran Goddard, Music Ministry Directory at ggoddard@emoryfellowship.org.
Weekly Worship: 8:00 a.m., 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 noon. All take place in the Sanctuary.

Thursday Morning Bible Study—Each Thursday at 9:00 a.m. in the Board Room.
Married Couples Ministry—Saturday, April 18, 6:00 p.m. the married couple’s ministry will begin the first of four sessions discussing the book, “The Love Dare.” Married couples in the house, we hope you will make plans to attend. Stay tuned for further details.
New Members—Also so, starting on Sunday, April 19, for new members joining the Emory Fellowship in 2008 and 2009, we are inviting you to a teaching seminar entitled “First Step: The Journey to Wholeness,” from 12:00 noon until 2:00 p.m. This two-hour session will be the first step for all Emory members to take on our congregation’s journey to wholeness.
Children’s Church—Children’s church needs your time, energy and talents. We are looking for volunteers to help with 3 to 5year olds and 6 to 10 year olds. If you are interested in serving, please contact Carolyn Anderson at 202/723.3130 or at canderson@emoryfellowship.org.
Small Groups—If you are looking for a way to get closer to Jesus while getting to know each other, then small groups are for you. Please fill out the “Bring It to the Altar” form found in your weekly bulletin and place it in the offering basket. Be sure to indicate your interest in small groups.
Youth Ministry—Saturday, April 18 at 10:30 a.m. is the meeting to plan the launch of our new integrated youth ministry. All youth, your parents and other interested adults need to attend and bring lots of creative ideas. Contact Nekosi Nelson for more details at youth@emoryfellowship.org.
Children’s Liturgical Dance Ministry—Is your child interested in giving God praise through dance? The Emory’s Children’s Dance Ministry is the place! We meet on Saturdays from 12:00-1:00 p.m. (ages 3-9) and 12:30-3:00 p.m. (ages 10-17). For more details, contact Neslyn Moore at mrn1026@aol.com.
United Methodist Women—On last Saturday approximately 30 women turned out to plan for the restart a unit of the United Methodist Women at Emory. A representative from the Greater Washington Regional office guided the process. In three weeks, officers will be selected. If you are interested in a leadership position in this minister, please attend the next meeting on Saturday, April 25. Listen for details. United Sisters In Christ (USIC)—We are celebrating “Financial” empowerment for the month of April through the theme “Women in Business” on Friday, April 24, 7:00 p.m. in the Board Room. Come and here information on how to start your own business, how to acquire grant money and what are the legal requirements when starting your own business. In addition, USIC is celebrating Women’s Month—The theme for this month is “God’s Whole Woman.” Mothers will also be honored on Mother’s Day, May 10 and during the month of May we will be honoring different women during our Prayer Breakfast on Saturday, May 16, 11:00 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. In addition, various women will be honored during each of our worship service. Attention will be given to eradicating cancer—we will support this effort by wearing various shades of pink. Women’s Day is May 17 and our guest preacher will be Rev. Telley Gadson, Pastor, St. Mark’s UMC, Sumter, SC. To conclude our Women’s Month of recognition, please join us for our regular scheduled gathering called Soul Food Night on Friday, May 29th for a session entitled “Sitting at Our Elders Feet” where we get an opportunity to learn and received wisdom from their own experiences. 2009 Tithing Envelopes—If you have not received your tithing envelopes for 2009 please complete the “Take It to the Altar” form in your weekly bulletin and leave it on the communion table so that we can get you envelopes expressly.

Each Sunday after the 12:00 noon worship service—Dinner and A Movie. All are welcome!!
Non-Perishable Food Needed—We need nonperishable foods brought to the church for people having trouble getting enough food. The demand is greater than the supply we have right now in our food pantry.
Exodus (Domestic Violence Recovery Ministry)—
On this past Wednesday, (April 1) The Interfaith Community Against Domestic Violence, Montgomery County held a one-day seminar to encourage faith groups to address and educate their congregations on the cycle of domestic violence. Glenn Ivy, Maryland State Attorney for Prince George’s County spoke with eloquence and frankness about the importance of the faith community’s involvement with realistic volunteer support approaches to serve victims. Topics discussed included how to assess danger, and teens that experience domestic and sexual violence. The seminar was held at Sligo Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Takoma Park, MD and Exodus was represented by Sumayya Coleman. Emory Global Light, Inc.—On Saturday, May 9th, from 6:00-10:00 p.m., is sponsoring a fundraiser that will benefit the building of a school in Northern Ghana. For details, contact Horace Dei (HoraceDei@verizon.net) or Elizabeth Brisbane (czfb@aol.com), co-directors of Emory Global Missions.
Easter Lilies—Each year during our Easter worship services, we decorate our Altar with Lilies. You can purchase a Lily as a gift for a loved one or a friend. The cost is just a $10.00 tax-deductible donation per Lily. Pick up your Lily after worship. Please make your check payable to Emory UMC and place it in the offering basket. Kudos to our Pastor and Marsha Brown (staff at the Emory Beacon of Light, Inc.)—For the great presentation on community development presented at the Black Methodist for Church Renewal Conference held in Pittsburg on March 26. Kudos to John Coleman (staff at the General Board of Church and Society) and a member of the Emory Fellowship. John served as reporter and photographer of the BMCR conference in Pittsburgh. See his article on the conference entitled “Black Caucus Examines New Church Starts” and his article on the speech given by The Rev. James A.
